Bottled Water Environmental Impact: Separating Fact from Fiction
People often misconstrue the bottled water environmental impact. The truth is, the bottled water industry is a key part of environmental stewardship and container safety solutions. We partner with other beverage producers and environment authorities. Together, we encourage and build upon the kerbside recycling infrastructure. This collective effort is essential for creating a sustainable future.
We need to further educate consumers about recycling. Consumers also need access to recycling points for all beverage containers and other recyclable goods. Singling out bottled water packaging ignores the fact that today’s society demands and relies upon packaged food and drinks. Therefore, the responsibility for recycling lies with everyone, from the consumer to the recycling authority.
Water Usage: A Look at the Facts
Annual bottled water production accounts for less than 1/100 of a percent (0.01%) of the total groundwater withdrawn in Australia & New Zealand each year. This means the industry uses a minimal amount of water resources.
In addition, the bottled water industry uses minimal amounts of ground or spring water to produce this important consumer product, and we do so with great efficiency. Singling out the bottled water industry—from among the thousands of food, beverage, and commercial water users—is unfair and just plain wrong. Ultimately, a misinformed focus of criticism on our industry does nothing to protect and sustain the nation’s renewable groundwater resources. You can visit the website of the Drinking Water Research Foundation for a study summary of the report, “Bottled Water Production in the United States: How Much Ground Water is Actually Being Used?” as an example of the impact of bottled water on groundwater supplies in a western society.
